Things that stopped me in my tracks.

my queerplatonic partner Samantha told me she read the news and it stated, a state in my country has decided to deny HRT to people with depression. This decision was made by passing a law. This makes me upset because despite being cisgender myself I understand how gender dysphoria can cause or make depression worse. I see this law as nothing more than an attack on transgender individuals. Upon further research I can find no source to back this up however patients with depression seeking HRT are often met with reluctance despite the numerous studies that show HRT actually reduces suicide and depression in both transgender and non-binary individuals.

today I saw on Facebook that Rocky Horror Picture Show is now banned in Florida. I promptly checked to see it this was true, it was. This makes me sad for all the people who will being missing out and it makes me angry because it is both an attack on art and on the LGBTQIA+ community even though that was never the point of Rocky Horror Picture Show. They argue it’s about protection of kids and preventing them from adult performances but ultimately it’s simply an anti-drag law which it is my understanding passed ultimately banning Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I learned that the supreme court made a ruling that businesses could discriminate against LGBTQIA+ individuals- customers. This is horrible and should have never been the ruling. It needs to be overturned. The Supreme Court on Friday June 30th 2023 ruled that businesses can discriminate against LGBTQIA+ Americans. The court ruled 6-3 in favor of a Colorado web designer who argued that she has the right under the First Amendment to refuse to create wedding websites for gay people. This ruling opens the door for greater discrimination than is already present.
What they have in common
The three things that stopped me in my tracks are discriminatory actions directly against the LGBTQIA+ community. These three things show how far America needs to come as they all relate to discriminatory laws. I don’t support discrimination of any kind but this community is more marginalized than others because they are a smaller community than say African Americans who are also still discriminated against. In America the census reports that approximately 13% of the United States population is African American whereas gallop reports only 7% of the United States identifies as LGBTQIA+. It is no surprise with the racism and bigotry African American LGBTQIA+ African Americans are one of the highest targeted demographic for discrimination and hate crimes.
